Enhancing ESG with Emissions & Biodiversity Monitoring

   Ores/Resa Challenge #3

The Challenge

ORES/RESA wants to improve its ESG performance by reducing gas leakage: the
quantification of gas leaks and their monitoring and/or minimizing environmental impact from operations.

What we're looking for

  • Tools or systems that detect gas leaks, either through AI models or sensor networks.

  • Tools or systems that measure and quantify gas leaks.

  • ESG reporting tools that quantify and visualize impact improvements.

  • Sustainable, safe, and long-lasting solutions.

Must-haves

  • Proven experience or use cases in similar infrastructure environments.

  • Integration-friendly (with IT architecture or field equipment).

  • Mid- to high-TRL (6–9) with measurable impact on COâ‚‚ or biodiversity.

  • Consistent with EU Regulation 2024/1787

  • User-friendly tools that fit existing O&M workflows.

Nice to have

  • ESG dashboards or reporting-ready visualizations.

  • Innovative, but practical (can be a known solution that’s new to the utility domain)

  • Potential for external communication (impact storytelling).

  • Requires full hardware retrofit or high-maintenance burden.

Not a fit

  • Not integrable with existing operations or data environments.

  • Long setup or ramp-up time.

Ideal Applicants

  • Technical providers focused on hardware-grid interface.

  • European-based startups or SMEs with validated pilots.

  • Providers who understand utility procurement and DSO usage constraints.

What Succes looks like

ORES/RESA can detect, quantify and mitigate gas leaks, reduce operational impact on the environment, and deliver quantifiable ESG improvements — all while maintaining safe and efficient grid operations. Better outcomes for the environment, neighborhoods, and compliance reporting.

The Challengers

As Wallonia's leading distribution network operator, ORES ensures that some key necessities are available for everyone: electricity, natural gas, municipal street lighting, every day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Delivering local public services, ORES meets the expectations of households, businesses and local public structures in 75% of Wallonia's communes, whether in terms of quality, accessibility and speed of service. Last but not least, ORES is fully committed to driving the ongoing energy transition by fostering innovation, sustainability, and a resilient energy future.

Resa is the main distribution system operator for electricity and gas in the Belgian province of Liège. The company owns, develops, operates, and maintains medium- and low-voltage electricity networks, as well as medium- and low-pressure gas distribution networks. Its mission also includes responsibility for the development, long-term reliability, and safety of these networks. In addition, Resa manages public lighting and fulfills certain public service obligations.
