Phase Balancing based on Smart Data
Ores/Resa Challenge #1
The Challenge
The rise of digital meters and residential electrification (EVs, heat pumps, PV systems) is increasing phase imbalance in the LV grid. With access to time-series energy data (current, voltage, power, etc.), we now have the opportunity to detect and solve imbalance through smart data - optimizing grid performance while reducing complaints and renewable curtailment.
What we're looking for
-
A data-driven solution that uses smart meter insights to identify unbalanced loads at the household and SME level.
-
Algorithms or optimization tools that help the DSO determine the optimal phase connection per user or zone.
-
A secure platform to process, analyze, and visualize smart grid data, while allowing operator interaction.
-
Expertise in data processing, AI, or machine learning for time series analysis.
Must-haves
-
Strong knowledge of energy networks and grid behavior.
-
GDPR-compliant architecture, with secure data handling.
-
Ability to interact with DSO environments and existing datasets.
-
Minimum TRL 5 or higher, with a roadmap toward commercial readiness.
-
A user-facing interface or platform (API, backend/frontend).
Nice to have
-
Modular architecture easily adaptable for other DSOs.
-
Easy-to-understand outputs for operational teams.
-
No GDPR compliance or data security model.
Not a fit
-
Opaque black-box solution without DSO interaction.
-
Large consultancy firms without hands-on solution focus.
-
Scientific publications or validation of your method.
Ideal Applicants
-
Agile, innovation-driven teams with strong data & energy domain knowledge.
-
Startups or scaleups combining analytics with real-world energy applications.
-
TRL 6–9 preferred, with demonstrated results or case studies.
What Succes looks like
Smart, secure use of smart meter data enables a 20–50% reduction in phase imbalance within 3 years, less curtailment of renewables, fewer complaints, and actionable insights for DSOs to proactively rebalance their networks.
Additional information
Network topology and metering can be helpful for this challenge;
contacts with DSO will be facilitated.
As Wallonia's leading distribution network operator, ORES ensures that some key necessities are available for everyone: electricity, natural gas, municipal street lighting, every day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Delivering local public services, ORES meets the expectations of households, businesses and local public structures in 75% of Wallonia's communes, whether in terms of quality, accessibility and speed of service. Last but not least, ORES is fully committed to driving the ongoing energy transition by fostering innovation, sustainability, and a resilient energy future.
Resa is the main distribution system operator for electricity and gas in the Belgian province of Liège. The company owns, develops, operates, and maintains medium- and low-voltage electricity networks, as well as medium- and low-pressure gas distribution networks. Its mission also includes responsibility for the development, long-term reliability, and safety of these networks. In addition, Resa manages public lighting and fulfills certain public service obligations.
