Market Applications for Green Heat Solutions

   John Cockerill Challenge #1

The Challenge

This is a different kind of innovation challenge - not a problem in search of a solution, but a solution searching for its market.

John Cockerill has developed a high-temperature green heat production and storage technology that is ready for deployment. However, the question remains: where in the industrial landscape can it deliver the most value?

John Cockerill is looking for partners who can help identify where the solution - or a hybrid configuration with existing systems - could be applied in real-world settings. The focus is on heat-intensive industries such as steel, chemicals, or process manufacturing, particularly in Belgium. We’re also open to developing tools or maps that match industrial sites with their temperature requirements.

What we're looking for

  • Partners who can help map industrial demand for high-temperature heat.

  • Expertise in simulating or analyzing industrial processes and energy needs.

  • Optimization tools or algorithms that assess process parameters and technology fit.

  • Support in refining the commercial narrative to target industrial decarbonization use cases.

  • Experience with industrial heat systems and energy flows.

Must-haves

  • Ability to model or simulate the integration of new heat solutions.

  • Technical understanding combined with commercial insight.

  • Collaborative approach to developing market-specific applications.

  • Knowledge of regulatory incentives, funding programs, or decarbonization pathways.

Nice to have

  • Experience with stakeholder engagement or multi-actor industrial ecosystems.

  • Business development or market analysis capabilities to build a go-to-market case.

  • No familiarity with industrial thermal systems.

Not a fit

  • Pure software firms without understanding of physical integration.

  • General consulting services with no hands-on involvement.

Ideal Applicants

  • Engineering firms, energy consultants, or simulation experts.

  • Process modeling experts who can translate system specs into business value.

  • Partners willing to co-create targeted use cases and help shape the market entry path.

What Succes looks like

John Cockerill identifies specific industrial applications for its green heat system, backed by simulation data and real-world scenarios that can convince target customers. The result? A clear path to market, and a new lever for large-scale industrial decarbonization.
